Avowed is one of the most anticipated RPGs of 2025 from Obsidian Entertainment, the studio known for Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds and Pillars of Eternity. This RPG set in the world of Eora will offer a rich story, a flexible combat system and a unique approach to exploration.
Avowed release date is set for February 18, 2025. The game will be available on PC and Xbox Series X/S, and will also be included in the Game Pass subscription.
Plot and GameplayAvowed is set in the world of Eora, familiar to Pillars of Eternity fans. You can travel to the island of the Living Lands, where you will encounter a mystical plague that affects the souls of the locals. The protagonist is an emissary of the Emperor, whose goal is not only to understand what is happening, but also to restore control over the fertile lands.
An interesting feature of Avowed will be the player’s ability to choose a side. Unite with the Empire, support one of the factions of the island or even stand on the side of the plague itself – the decision is yours. The island is very diverse – jungles, deserts, swamps, volcanoes and snowy peaks await explorers.
In Avowed there will be a choice between first-person and third-person view. The main gameplay emphasis is on the reactive and flexible combat system. You’ll be able to create a character with two revolvers, pick up an axe and a magic wand, or stick to the classic image of a warrior, mage, or knave.
Using the environment will add depth to the combat system. For example, you can freeze a puddle to make enemies slide, or hit it with lightning to deal damage. In addition, there are parkour elements to the game. Mechanics will be available that will give you the ability to climb walls, swim and dive, finding hidden secrets in underwater caves.
Despite the scale, there will be no open world in Avowed. But there will be several large locations that can be explored as the story progresses. However, you can return to already visited locations at any time.
There are also rumors that modifications will be available in the game. Using Avowed mods it will be possible to add a lot of new interesting content. There is no certainty that there will be an official tool for creating modifications, but the game community will definitely create different modifications on their own.
Partners
The protagonist in the adventure will be accompanied by up to two partners out of the four available. Each has their own story, unique abilities and influence on the plot. For example, the friendly Kai will attract the attention of enemies, while Giatta, a mage-animancer, will help in the study of souls and prove useful in battle.
Partners serve as support roles, and their personal arcs add depth to the interactions. However, there will be no romantic relationship mechanics in the game.
Roleplaying SystemAvowed features pumping through ability selection rather than direct character enhancement. A character has six main parameters:
– Strength increases damage and allows you to carry more items.
– Constitution increases health and resistance to negative effects.
– Dexterity speeds up actions and increases damage from attacks.
– Perception is responsible for critical hit chance and attack range.
– Intelligence increases mana reserve and magic resistance.
– Determination increases stamina and the effectiveness of Second Breath.
There are four main skill trees available: Warrior, Ranger, Wizard, and Godlike. The latter is associated with unique abilities that the player will unlock as they progress.
One of the features of enemies in Avowed is the “shout radius”. This means that you can run away from an enemy if they are far away from your allies. Among the interesting enemies are especially blue-orange mushrooms, which attack in groups using a combination of long-range and short-range attacks.
Equipment plays an important role in the game. The camp, which serves as a hub for the group, allows you to upgrade your equipment, prepare for battle, and rest. The developers promise a lot of customization options that will allow you to adapt the style of the game to your preferences.
If you like RPGs with a focus on elections and history, Avowed should definitely be on your list. And after the release, don’t forget to check out the mods for Avowed – they are sure to add new mechanics and features to this stunning world!
